Tesla seeks EU approval for assisted driving technology
Tesla is navigating a regulatory and political process to obtain European Union approval for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, marketed in the continent as Tesla Assisted Driving. The system is classified as Level 2 advanced driver assistance, requiring constant driver supervision.
Currently, 10 EU member states have approved the technology: the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Denmark, Belgium, Croatia, Slovakia, and Latvia. To achieve widespread implementation, Tesla requires a qualified majority of at least 15 states representing 65% of the EU population. While Germany and Italy have expressed support for rapid approval, the regulatory timeline remains uncertain, with potential votes delayed from October to December 2026.
Tesla has released data claiming the system reduces accident rates by four to nine times compared to manual driving. However, safety experts and regulators have contested these statistics, criticizing the methodology used to calculate effectiveness, noting that the systems are primarily used in controlled environments like highways.
