Tesla to introduce pothole avoidance for Full Self-Driving

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software will soon include a feature to avoid potholes. Musk confirmed the update is “coming soon” in response to a customer inquiry on August 31.

Pothole avoidance has been listed as an upcoming improvement in Tesla’s FSD v14 release notes for some time. The feature aims to mitigate vehicle damage, such as tire, wheel, and alignment issues, as well as potential occupant injury caused by abrupt road changes.

While Tesla has previously worked on labeling bumps and potholes to allow vehicles to slow down or steer around them, the current FSD stack still requires human supervision. The implementation of this feature is expected to leverage improved 3D geometry understanding and enhanced AI processing to better recognize road hazards that the cameras may not currently treat as objects.
