Tesla Full Self-Driving safety feature development
Overview
Tesla is expanding the capabilities of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to include advanced hazard and collision avoidance. Initially, CEO Elon Musk indicated that a pothole avoidance feature was “coming soon” to mitigate vehicle damage and occupant injury by leveraging improved 3D geometry understanding and AI processing.
Following these developments, real-world footage has demonstrated the Automatic Collision Evasion feature in action. This system, described by Tesla AI lead Ashok Elluswamy as ‘a guardian angel always looking out for you,’ is designed to intervene during imminent frontal collisions or when a driver appears inattentive. The feature is currently appearing in FSD (Supervised) versions for vehicles equipped with HW4 hardware.
