Tesla's FSD safety claims challenged as stock slips, analysts split on outlook

Independent traffic researchers have criticised Tesla's safety statistics for its Full Self‑Driving (FSD) system, calling the claim that the software could prevent 32,000 deaths misleading. Their analysis says the figure is based on unrealistic assumptions, such as replacing every U.S. vehicle with a Tesla equipped with FSD. The controversy comes as the EU moves toward broader approval, with the Dutch authority already granting a provisional type‑approval and other member states evaluating the system.

The debate has impacted Tesla's share price, which fell about two percent to €346.80. At the same time, analysts offered mixed views: Piper Sandler highlighted the potential of autonomous driving, while JPMorgan raised its price target for Tesla from $145 to $475, citing the company's unique vertical integration of hardware and software. The divergent analyst opinions underscore the uncertainty surrounding Tesla's market prospects amid regulatory scrutiny.

In China, drivers have been found to trick the interior camera with small objects, further raising questions about the reliability of the FSD system. European regulators stress that any EU‑wide approval will require a majority of member states representing at least 65 % of the EU population to consent.
