TETFund announces major funding for Nigerian research and skills centres
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced several strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing research, innovation, and practical skills within Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
Executive Secretary Dr. Sonny Echono urged Nigerian researchers to transition from publishing academic papers to developing marketable innovations that address societal challenges and reduce dependence on foreign technology. This effort is being supported through the Research for Impact Initiative (R4i), implemented in partnership with Innov8 Hub, to strengthen links between academia, industry, and government.
Additionally, Aminu Masari, chairman of the Fund’s Board of Trustees, disclosed that N10 billion has been earmarked for 2026 to establish skills acquisition centres in polytechnics. This program aims to improve graduate employability and entrepreneurship. Other approved funding includes N48 billion for upgrading engineering and technology facilities in 12 universities and N6.09 billion for research grants under the 2025 National Research Fund cycle, targeting sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and science.
