TETFund educational and research funding initiatives
Overview
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has initiated several strategic funding programs to enhance technical education, research, and innovation in Nigeria.
In mid-October 2026, TETFund approved the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) as a beneficiary, with annual funding for the DICON Institute of Technology set to begin in 2027. This initiative aims to develop specialized laboratories and ICT facilities to bolster domestic manufacturing capacity in fields like mechatronics.
Following this, TETFund announced broader financial commitments, including N10 billion for 2026 to establish skills acquisition centres in polytechnics. Further allocations include N48 billion for upgrading engineering and technology facilities across 12 universities and N6.09 billion for research grants under the 2025 National Research Fund cycle. Executive Secretary Dr. Sonny Echono has encouraged researchers to focus on developing marketable innovations to reduce reliance on foreign technology.
