Tether expands into lightweight AI for emerging markets

Tether is expanding its operations into artificial intelligence, focusing on developing lightweight AI tools designed to run on smartphones in emerging markets. Chief Executive Officer Paolo Ardoino stated that the company aims to provide practical applications for health, finance, and sports, rather than competing to build advanced frontier AI models. This strategy targets users in regions such as Africa and South America, where Tether maintains a significant presence among its 650 million global users.

Ardoino noted that the company increasingly views itself as a ‘digital dollar and digital gold company’ rather than a traditional cryptocurrency firm. This shift follows Tether’s investments in decentralized communications, agriculture, and solar-powered infrastructure. A recent financial audit by KPMG indicated that Tether’s reserves exceed its liabilities by $6.8 billion. The company intends to leverage its global distribution to bridge digital gaps, though Ardoino cautioned that unequal access to AI could exacerbate existing economic instabilities.
