Tether expansion into lightweight artificial intelligence

Tether has initiated a strategic expansion into the artificial intelligence sector, focusing on lightweight tools for emerging markets. CEO Paolo Ardoino indicated the company intends to provide practical applications for finance, health, and sports rather than developing frontier AI models, describing the firm as a ‘digital dollar and digital gold company’.

Following this strategic shift, Tether released a suite of open-source, offline AI translation models named TranslatePsy. These models, including TranslatePsy-AfriSLM, TranslatePsy-AfriNano, and TranslatePsy-EuroNano, are designed to run locally on smartphones and laptops to assist users in regions with limited internet connectivity. The African-focused models support 19 languages, such as Swahili, Hausa, and Zulu, while the European model supports nine languages. The company noted that the smaller TranslatePsy-AfriSLM model outperformed larger frameworks like Meta’s NLLB-3.3B on specific benchmarks despite its smaller parameter count.
