Tetrachloroethylene exposure linked to increased liver fibrosis risk
A study published in Liver International by researchers at Keck Medicine of USC has linked exposure to tetrachloroethylene (PCE) to a threefold increase in the risk of significant liver fibrosis. PCE is a common volatile organic compound used extensively in dry cleaning, industrial manufacturing, and various consumer products such as adhesives, spot removers, and stainless steel polish.
Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), investigators found that approximately 7% of the surveyed population had detectable levels of PCE in their blood. The research demonstrated a distinct dose-response relationship: for every one nanogram per milliliter increase in blood PCE concentration, the likelihood of significant liver fibrosis escalated fivefold.
Lead author Brian P. Lee, MD, MAS, noted that the findings highlight the underreported role environmental factors play in liver health. The study suggests that chemical exposure may explain why individuals with identical health and demographic profiles develop liver disease at different rates.
