Texas Instruments debuts multiaxial current sensor for EVs
Texas Instruments has introduced the TMCS2100-Q1, a multiaxial coreless Hall-effect current sensor designed for hybrid and electric vehicle (HEV/EV) traction inverter applications. This new technology aims to resolve the traditional design trade-off between precision and system size/weight in electric powertrains.
Unlike standard coreless sensors that are limited to single-axis measurements, the TMCS2100-Q1 measures magnetic fields in both horizontal and vertical directions. By utilizing a proprietary algorithm to process multiaxial data, the sensor can compensate for errors caused by mechanical displacement and vibration. This approach is reported to be up to 20 times more accurate than single-axis alternatives.
Improved current sensing accuracy is expected to enhance the powertrain torque control loop, leading to more efficient motor control, smoother ride quality, and extended driving range. The coreless architecture allows for more compact and power-dense inverter designs without requiring busbar modifications.
