Texas Instruments unveils new Hall-effect sensor for EVs
Texas Instruments has introduced the TMCS2100-Q1, a multiaxial coreless Hall-effect current sensor designed for use in electric vehicle (EV) traction inverters. The sensor aims to resolve the traditional trade-off between the accuracy of bulky magnetic-core sensors and the compact size of coreless alternatives.
By measuring magnetic field components both horizontally and vertically, the sensor utilizes a proprietary algorithm to compensate for measurement errors caused by vibrations, mounting deviations, or magnetic crosstalk. Texas Instruments claims this technology makes the sensor 20 times more accurate than current single-direction coreless sensors, maintaining errors below 1% even with positional shifts of up to 0.4 millimeters.
Improved measurement precision in the traction inverter can lead to better motor control, reducing torque ripple. For EV drivers, this translates to smoother acceleration, reduced motor noise, improved efficiency, and potentially extended driving range.
