Texas teen arrested for allegedly abandoning infant at San Antonio bus stop

An 18-year-old woman, Karla Ibarra, was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, after allegedly attempting to abandon her one-month-old son with a stranger at a bus stop.

According to reports, Ibarra approached Jennifer Benavides at a downtown bus stop on September 13, initially asking to borrow a phone. During the encounter, Ibarra reportedly offered to give her baby to Benavides, providing the infant's birth certificate, Medicaid information, and Social Security card. Benavides attempted to assist by taking the mother and child to a nearby friend's home, but Ibarra allegedly left the infant there and departed in an Uber.

Authorities arrested Ibarra after she returned to the area later that night. She faces charges of child abandonment and endangerment. The infant has since been placed with relatives through Child Protective Services. The incident has drawn attention to Texas’s ‘Baby Moses Law,’ which allows parents to anonymously and safely surrender newborns aged 60 days or younger at designated locations such as hospitals or fire stations.
