Textile recycling and clothing swaps promoted in Germany

In Germany, various initiatives are promoting sustainable ways to manage unwanted clothing, ranging from official waste management guidelines to community-led social events.

In Potsdam, the city is addressing the new mandatory separate collection of old textiles effective from 2025. Local waste advisors clarify that while clothing containers are intended for wearable and intact items, completely unusable or torn textiles should still be disposed of via residual waste. Potsdam currently maintains 174 clothing containers across 114 locations to facilitate proper disposal.

In Arnsberg, community-focused clothing swap parties, also known as ‘swapping’, offer an alternative to traditional collection. These events allow participants to exchange clean, high-quality garments and accessories in a social setting, emphasizing the reuse of fashion rather than simple disposal.
