Aigaleo textile workshops destroyed by major fire

A major fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning at two textile and clothing workshops on Agiou Panteleimonos Street in the Elaiona area of Aigaleo. The blaze spread rapidly due to the high volume of flammable materials, including fabrics and suspected gas cylinders, causing extensive structural damage and partial roof collapses.

Emergency services, including 35 firefighters and 11 vehicles, worked through the night to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residential areas and businesses. Due to the intense heat and risk of structural instability, authorities conducted a precautionary evacuation of all residents within a 400-meter radius of the site, assisted by the Hellenic Police.

Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions, described as “bangs” and the sound of breaking bottles, shortly before the fire became visible. The smoke from the incident heavily impacted the surrounding area, with plumes drifting toward Piraeus. The Athens Arson Crimes Investigation Unit has been deployed to determine the exact cause of the fire.
