Thailand and New Zealand have officially elevated their bilateral relationship to a “strategic partnership” during an official visit by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to Auckland. Marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the two leaders signed a Joint Declaration and a Joint Plan of Action for 2026–2030.

A primary goal of the partnership is to triple bilateral trade to approximately US$7.5 billion by 2045. Cooperation will focus on four main pillars: political and security cooperation (addressing transnational crime, cyber security, and human trafficking), economic and innovation cooperation (food and energy security, green economy, and sustainable agriculture), people-to-people links, and regional/multilateral cooperation.

Key economic developments include the planned resumption of direct Thai Airways flights between Bangkok and Auckland by 2027 to boost tourism and trade. Additionally, major New Zealand companies, including T&G Global and Skyline Enterprises, have expressed intentions to invest in Thailand, focusing on fruit distribution and indoor entertainment sectors. The visit also included the signing of a first-of-its-kind cultural cooperation agreement to strengthen ties in arts, heritage, and creative industries.
