Thailand-New Zealand strategic partnership

Overview

Thailand and New Zealand have elevated their bilateral relationship to a ‘strategic partnership’ during an official visit by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to Auckland. To mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the two nations signed a Joint Declaration and a Joint Plan of Action for 2026–2030.

The partnership aims to triple bilateral trade to approximately US$7.5 billion by 2045. Cooperation is structured around four pillars: political and security cooperation, economic and innovation cooperation, people-to-people links, and regional/multilateral cooperation.

Economic initiatives include the planned resumption of direct Thai Airways flights between Bangkok and Auckland by 2027. Furthermore, New Zealand companies such as T&G Global and Skyline Enterprises have indicated intentions to invest in Thailand’s fruit distribution and indoor entertainment sectors. The visit also resulted in a cultural cooperation agreement focused on arts, heritage, and creative industries.
