Thailand announces Bangkok transit fare cap and joint ticketing plan
Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Pipat Ratchakitprekan, has announced a plan to implement a joint ticketing system for Bangkok's mass transit network starting January 1, 2027. The initiative aims to reduce the cost of living for residents by capping fares at a maximum of 45 baht per trip, with an initial entry fee of 17 baht. Under this new system, passengers will not be charged multiple entry fees when transferring between different lines.
The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) will manage the central system, while Krungthai Bank will handle the backend operations and fare calculations between providers. The system will support EMV international payment standards, allowing tourists to use compatible cards directly. A key priority is integrating the Green Line, which currently uses Rabbit cards, into the EMV system to ensure seamless connectivity with the Purple and Blue lines.
In addition to rail improvements, the Ministry of Transport plans to modernize the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) bus fleet. The government intends to introduce 2,320 electric buses (EV) throughout 2027, with the goal of transitioning the entire BMTA fleet to electric vehicles by the end of that year.
