Bangkok transportation system reforms
Overview
Thailand is implementing major reforms to Bangkok’s transportation infrastructure and costs. The Ministry of Transport has announced a unified single-ticket system for urban electric rail lines, set to begin on January 1, 2027. This system aims to cap standardized fares between 17 and 45 baht and eliminate multiple entry fees during transfers. To facilitate this, the government plans an annual subsidy of approximately 5 billion baht, with Krungthai Bank managing the central clearing house and backend operations. The system will support EMV international payment standards to ensure connectivity between different lines, including the integration of the Green Line into the EMV system.
Alongside rail updates, the Ministry of Transport plans to modernize the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) bus fleet by introducing 2,320 electric buses throughout 2027, with the goal of a full electric transition by year-end.
In a separate adjustment to road transport, toll fees on the Prachim Ratthaya Expressway are scheduled to increase on December 15. For four-wheel vehicles, tolls will rise from 65 baht to 80 baht, while fees for larger vehicles will also see increases according to the new rate structure approved by the Expressway Authority of Thailand.
