Thailand Braces for Heavy Rain and Flood Risk as Monsoon Intensifies
The Thai Meteorological Department forecasts that heavy rain will affect 60‑70% of Thailand on 5 August, with the strongest downpours in the northeastern provinces such as Nong Khai, Udon Thani and Ubon Ratchathani, and significant rainfall in the north, central, eastern and southern regions. The agency warns of flash‑flooding, rapid runoff and landslides, especially on steep slopes and low‑lying river valleys.
The monsoon trough is moving through northern Laos and a low‑pressure area over northern Vietnam, while a developing tropical storm named Kujira is strengthening over the South China Sea and tracking toward the Philippines. Although Kujira is not expected to enter Thai waters, the combined effect of the monsoon and the low pressure is generating 2‑3 metre waves in the Andaman Sea, prompting mariners to avoid sailing in affected zones.
