Thailand braces for heavy rains and flooding as monsoon intensifies
Thailand's Meteorological Department issued its third heavy‑rain warning covering June 28 to July 3, forecasting a nationwide increase in rainfall. The eastern region and the southern west‑coast are expected to experience localized downpours, while the southwest monsoon strengthens over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.
Authorities warn that short, intense showers could trigger flash floods, rapid river rises, landslides and mudslides on slopes and near rivers. Coastal areas face high waves of 2‑3 metres, exceeding 3 metres when thunderstorms occur, prompting advisories for ships to avoid storm zones and for small vessels in the Andaman Sea to remain in port. In Bangkok’s metropolitan area, about 60 % of districts are forecast to see thunderstorms, raising concerns about road flooding that could disrupt commuter traffic during peak hours. Temperatures are expected to range from 26‑27 °C at night to 34‑36 °C by day, with winds of 10‑20 km/h.
The department urged residents to stay alert, monitor updates closely, and exercise caution when travelling, planning outings or engaging in maritime activities.
