Thailand enables Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs for retail investors
Thailand has implemented new regulatory rules allowing for the listing of Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. This move is designed to provide retail investors with a regulated way to gain exposure to digital assets without the need to purchase or store the underlying cryptocurrencies directly.
While the framework marks a significant milestone for the nation's digital asset market, experts suggest that initial market enthusiasm may be limited. James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, indicated that early inflows are likely to be modest, potentially reaching only tens of millions of dollars rather than the billions seen in other markets. He cited the experience of Hong Kong as a precedent for cautious initial demand.
Before trading can commence, asset managers must obtain specific regulatory approval and establish secure custody and distribution arrangements for the underlying assets. The new rules also aim to manage how domestic brokers facilitate exposure to overseas crypto ETFs, focusing on expanding local access for the general public.
