Thailand faces ongoing floods and potential for more storms
Thailand faces ongoing flood risks as heavy rainfall continues to impact several provinces. In Nan, authorities are preparing for new heavy rain following previous flooding, while the water levels in the Nan River basin have stabilized. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has cut short a trip to Australia and New Zealand to return to Bangkok and visit Nan to assess damage to infrastructure and relief efforts.
Approximately 74,000 people are currently affected by flooding across six provinces, including Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Phichit, Nakhon Ratchasima, Samut Prakan, and Ayutthaya. While water levels are receding in some areas, the Yom River continues to carry high volumes of water toward Sukhothai, posing a risk to low-lying communities.
Climate and disaster expert Seree Supratid of Rangsit University warns that seven to nine more storms could form before the end of the current season. Although rainfall is expected to decrease gradually toward the end of August, specific dates such as August 25, 26, and 29 require close monitoring due to potential weather systems near Hainan that could bring increased precipitation to western, northern, and eastern regions.
