Thailand Faces Potential Super El Niño Drought Through 2027

Thailand’s meteorological authorities warn that a possible Super El Niño could develop from late 2026 into early 2027, bringing hotter temperatures, reduced rainfall and heightened pressure on water supplies and agriculture. The Thai Meteorological Department, citing U.S. NOAA forecasts, estimates an 81 % chance of a very strong El Niño event between October and December 2026, which could be the strongest since 1950. The uneven distribution of rain may cause prolonged dry spells in interior provinces while still producing intense short‑duration storms, threatening rice paddies, reservoirs and household water use.

Officials such as Surapong Sarapa, director of the department’s weather‑forecast division, stress that climate‑change‑driven temperature rises of about two degrees Celsius could exacerbate these impacts. They call for concrete water‑resource plans to mitigate pressure on the nation’s four major central‑plain dams and to protect the agricultural economy.

The outlook remains a risk assessment; forecasts may change as new climate data become available. Residents, farmers and businesses are advised to monitor official warnings and prepare for possible drought and flash‑flood conditions.
