Thailand faces severe monsoon rains and hazardous sea conditions

The Thai Meteorological Department warned that an intensifying southwest monsoon is bringing heavy rainfall to much of Thailand, with the northern and upper‑northeastern provinces facing the greatest risk. About 60 % of these regions could experience flash floods and rapid runoff, especially in hilly areas of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Tak. Eastern provinces such as Chanthaburi and Trat also face a high probability of sustained downpours.

Bangkok is expected to see a 40 % chance of sudden thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, potentially disrupting commuting. Strong to moderate winds across the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are generating waves that exceed two metres in storm‑affected zones, prompting maritime warnings for cautious navigation.

Authorities have pre‑positioned water pumps in flood‑prone districts, are monitoring river gauges, and have urged residents to stay alert for flash‑flood threats and possible landslides.
