Thailand faces toxic waste leaks and flood relief budget shortages

Thailand is facing a dual crisis involving environmental contamination and a shortage of flood relief funds. In Prachin Buri province, toxic chemical waste has leaked into floodwaters following a broken landfill embankment. Water testing by the Pollution Control Department revealed extreme levels of petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals, leading to mass fish deaths. In response, Industry Minister Varawut Silpa-archa has ordered the emergency closure of three nearby factories under the Factory Act.

Simultaneously, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reports that the initial flood compensation budget is nearly exhausted. Of the 5,281 million baht originally allocated, only 66 million baht remains. To continue supporting approximately 1.48 million affected households, Director-General Nirat Pongsitthaworn is proposing an additional 10.508 billion baht to the Cabinet. This request aims to provide ongoing financial assistance to families impacted by severe monsoon rains between May and September.
