Environmental contamination and flood relief in Thailand
Overview
Thailand has faced a dual crisis involving environmental contamination and a shortage of flood relief funds. In Prachin Buri province, a broken landfill embankment caused toxic chemical waste to leak into floodwaters, resulting in mass fish deaths. In response, the Industry Minister ordered the emergency closure of three nearby factories.
Following reports of the contamination, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) issued a correction regarding water quality analysis in the Si Maha Phot district. The department admitted to a reporting error where ammonia and aluminum concentration levels were inadvertently swapped. Corrected data indicated aluminum levels between 0.559 and 3.547 mg/L, while most heavy metals remained below 0.01 mg/L. The PCD plans to collect sediment samples from the Prachin Buri River once flood conditions normalize to investigate the cause of the fish deaths.
Separately, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that the initial flood compensation budget is nearly exhausted, with only 66 million baht remaining of the original 5,281 million baht. Officials have proposed an additional 10.508 billion baht to the Cabinet to support approximately 1.48 million households affected by monsoon rains.
