Thailand faces urgent infrastructure needs amid extreme weather and flooding

Thailand is facing escalating climate challenges as extreme weather events, including torrential rains, heatwaves, and coastal erosion, threaten its urban infrastructure and economy. Bangkok has recently experienced severe flooding that overwhelmed existing water management systems, prompting Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to call for high-capacity drainage tunnels and long-term infrastructure overhauls.

In contrast to the flooding in the capital, northern provinces like Chiang Mai successfully managed record rainfall of 203mm through the use of “dam headroom.” This strategy involves maintaining deliberate empty space in reservoirs to catch sudden surges of water, preventing rivers from overflowing.

Meanwhile, authorities are preparing for further heavy rainfall expected between October 5 and October 10. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has instructed disaster response agencies to prepare personnel, pumps, and boats to mitigate the risks of flash floods and landslides, particularly in southern Thailand.
