Thailand Finance Ministry to integrate data to combat illicit funds
Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Ekniti Nitithanprapas, has ordered the design of a new system to integrate financial data across six government agencies to combat illicit financial activities and ‘grey money’. The initiative aims to close regulatory loopholes and standardize oversight through a coordinated effort involving the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Thailand, the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, and the Royal Thai Police.
The strategy focuses on three primary pillars. First, it seeks to upgrade Know Your Customer (KYC) and Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) standards to meet international Financial Action Task Force (FATF) requirements. Second, the government will establish an anonymous financial data warehouse. This will allow data scientists to analyze transaction patterns and predict fraudulent behavior, such as criminals splitting transactions to stay below reporting thresholds.
Finally, the plan includes developing a national incident reporting system that integrates with financial institutions, allowing citizens to report crimes once and have the information distributed to all relevant agencies. The Ministry of Finance has set a 30-day deadline for the design of these integrated data systems.
