Thailand financial crime prevention initiatives

Overview

Thailand has initiated a multi-sector effort to combat illicit financial activities and ‘grey money’ through enhanced regulatory frameworks and data integration.

Initially, the Bank of Thailand and 11 financial sector associations agreed to the ‘Framework for Safeguarding the Financial Sector from Illicit Activities’. This initiative focuses on strengthening ‘know your customer’ (KYC) protocols, increasing scrutiny of high-risk cash transactions, and utilizing technology to detect unusual patterns. The framework also includes creating a database of high-risk individuals linked to the Central Fraud Registry to facilitate information sharing and account freezing.

Following this, the Ministry of Finance expanded the scope of the crackdown. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Ekniti Nitithanprapas ordered the integration of financial data across six government agencies, including the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) and the Royal Thai Police. This strategy aims to meet international Financial Action Task Force (FATF) requirements by establishing an anonymous financial data warehouse for pattern analysis and developing a national incident reporting system for citizens.
