Thailand floods cause eight deaths and affect 545,000 people
Severe monsoon flooding has struck Thailand, causing at least eight deaths and affecting over 545,000 people across 25 provinces. In Bangkok, all 50 districts have been declared disaster-affected areas following nearly 300mm of rainfall within a 48-hour period.
The flooding has impacted approximately 52,000 households in the capital, forcing thousands of residents into temporary shelters. Authorities have closed numerous municipal schools to ensure safety, and official holidays have been declared in Bangkok. While Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports remain operational, travelers are advised to allow extra time due to road congestion and service disruptions.
Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has visited affected areas to oversee relief efforts, which include military assistance for food, water, and transportation. Economically, the floods in 21 provinces are estimated to cause a short-term loss of approximately 10 billion Baht. Meanwhile, the Royal Irrigation Department has warned of rising river levels as water discharges from the Chao Phraya Dam are expected to increase.
