Thailand Government Targets 40‑Year‑Old Civil Servants for Voluntary Early Retirement
Bangkok’s central government has announced a plan to cut the size of its civil service by offering voluntary early retirement to employees around age 40. The scheme initially focuses on the 41‑ to 50‑year‑old cohort, which makes up roughly 30% of the 414,000 public‑sector workers. Officials say the move will lower personnel costs and allow routine administrative roles to be replaced by technology.
Critics warn the program could trigger a “brain drain,” as highly skilled staff are likely to accept the pension premium and move to the private sector, leaving the state with fewer problem‑solvers. Analysts suggest letting older workers retire naturally and permanently closing vacant posts instead. The plan will be evaluated after its first phase and could be expanded by the 2027 fiscal year if deemed successful.
