Thailand investigates cosmetic clinics after influencer death

Thai health authorities have launched an investigation into the cosmetic surgery industry following the death of Igho Ubiribo, a 43-year-old British-Nigerian influencer. Ubiribo died from a blocked lung artery after receiving a cosmetic filler injection at a clinic in Bangkok.

In response to the incident, officials are inspecting clinics across the capital to verify medical licenses and safety protocols. The event has brought increased scrutiny to Thailand’s aesthetic medicine market, which includes approximately 7,000 clinics nationwide.

The tragedy highlights the complexities of medical tourism in Thailand, a sector valued at an estimated US$31.5 billion in 2024. While the country attracts international patients with accredited hospitals and competitive pricing, experts emphasize the critical importance of post-operative aftercare and recovery monitoring when patients are far from their home healthcare networks.
