Thailand issues heavy rain and flash flood warnings
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued widespread weather warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Thailand due to a strengthening southwest monsoon and a monsoon trough passing through Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam.
Significant rainfall is expected in several regions. The East is particularly at risk, with very heavy rain forecast for Chanthaburi and Trat. Northern and Northeastern provinces, including Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Tak, Udon Thani, and Nong Khai, face high probabilities of thunderstorms and heavy downpours. Central regions and Bangkok are also expected to experience frequent thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain.
Authorities have warned residents in low-lying areas and near hillsides to prepare for flash floods, sudden runoff, and river overflows. In the Andaman Sea, strong winds are expected to produce waves between 2 and 3 meters, exceeding 3 meters during thunderstorms, prompting warnings for small vessels to remain ashore.
In Chiang Rai, the severe weather has already caused infrastructure damage. A vital bridge in the Mae Suai district connecting the Pa Daed and Mae Phrik sub-districts collapsed due to intense water currents and erosion, cutting off local traffic. Officials are currently requesting a temporary Bailey bridge to restore access to affected villages.
