Thailand orders flood preparedness in Nan, Phayao, and Lamphun

Deputy Prime Minister Yotsanan Wongsawat has issued an urgent directive to the governors of Nan, Phayao, and Lamphun provinces in Northern Thailand to prepare for potential flooding and flash floods. The order follows meteorological forecasts for August 2026, predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds that could lead to sudden flooding and overflowing rivers.

The directive outlines eight key measures for immediate implementation. These include close monitoring of upstream areas and high-risk zones, such as economic areas and tourist destinations. To ensure rapid communication, authorities are instructed to utilize the Cell Broadcast system and coordinate through local community leaders.

Emergency preparedness measures also include standing by KA-32 helicopters for evacuations and relief deliveries in hard-to-reach areas, as well as preparing personnel, boats, and water pumps for 24-hour operation. Additionally, provinces must prepare temporary shelters with adequate food, water, and medical supplies, and establish command centers to prioritize assistance for vulnerable groups.
