Thailand prepares for heavy rain as Storm Maysak impacts north and east
The Thai Meteorological Department issued an advisory on Storm Maysak, noting that the storm’s centre moved from Vietnam to southern China with wind speeds near 93 km/h before weakening. Although the cyclone itself did not enter Thailand, monsoon flows and the storm’s rainbands are expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall on July 5‑6, 2024 across northern, upper‑northeastern, eastern and some southern provinces.
Sea conditions in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand are also forecast to worsen, with wave heights of 2‑3 m and higher in areas of thunderstorms. The Department of Agricultural Extension urged farmers to prepare drainage, prune vulnerable branches, and assess risk. Farmers registered with the agency can apply for emergency assistance, with payments up to 1,340 baht per rai for rice, 1,980 baht for crops and vegetables, and 4,048 baht for orchards, subject to damage verification within 90 days.
Mariners were warned to avoid small‑boat operations in affected waters during the storm period.
