Thailand reports surge in youth HIV infections

Thailand is facing a significant public health challenge as cumulative HIV cases have surpassed 557,000 in 2026. While there has been a slight decrease in overall infections over the last three years, new infections remain high, with approximately 8,000 to 9,000 new cases reported annually. This figure significantly exceeds the national target of fewer than 1,000 new infections per year.

Health officials have expressed particular concern regarding a demographic shift, as individuals aged 15 to 24 now account for nearly half of all new HIV infections. Additionally, the burden is geographically concentrated, with 13 of the country's 77 provinces reporting more than 10,000 cases each. In response, the government is working to expand access to preventative treatments such as PrEP, though challenges regarding social stigma and reaching at-risk groups persist.
