Thailand dismisses 3,868 officials over local exam fraud

Thailand's Department of Local Administration (DLA) has finalized the dismissal of 3,868 local government officials following a widespread examination fraud scandal. Nirat Pongsittithavorn, acting Director-General of the DLA, announced that the revocations took effect nationwide on August 31.

While investigations initially identified 5,925 instances of manipulated scores, the DLA clarified that 3,868 individuals had already been appointed to positions and required formal dismissal. The remaining 1,000-plus individuals identified in the fraud were still on waiting lists and will simply not be called for appointment.

Among those dismissed, approximately 146 individuals had resigned prior to the announcement. However, officials emphasized that resignation does not grant immunity from criminal prosecution. Evidence of the fraud has been forwarded to several investigative bodies, including the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), the police, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), and the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO).

To restore fairness, the DLA plans to call upon legitimate candidates from a reserve list of approximately 50,000 people to fill the vacated positions, with new appointments expected to begin in October.
