Thailand suspends firearm permits following deadly school shooting
Following a mass shooting at a school outside Bangkok that left nine people dead, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has suspended the issuance of new firearm purchase permits and ordered a review of existing licenses. The government is also moving to expedite a new gun control law that would introduce stricter regulations and harsher penalties.
In response to recent violence, the Royal Thai Police have launched a nationwide crackdown targeting illegal firearms, ammunition, and explosives. This includes increased patrols, intelligence gathering, and monitoring of illegal weapon sales on social media. Additionally, the education minister has proposed new safety measures, such as screening all individuals entering educational premises for weapons.
Thailand maintains a high rate of civilian firearm ownership, with an estimated 10.3 million guns in circulation as of 2017, according to the Small Arms Survey.
