Thailand to dismiss officials implicated in local government exam‑cheating scandal

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed that Interior Undersecretary Arsit Sampantharat will fire any local government officials found to have participated in a recruitment exam‑rigging scheme, require repayment of salaries and allowances, and pursue criminal charges. The scandal involves up to one‑third of roughly 15,000 candidates, with about 5,000 cases showing score mismatches after a raid in Nonthaburi seized 3,000 exam documents and implicated tutors.

A cabinet‑appointed investigation commission, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilaprapha, met for the first time on 8 July. It is tasked with producing an initial report by 15 July and a final report by 27 July, with interim updates every ten days. The commission will examine the facts and legal issues surrounding the exam fraud affecting municipal and sub‑district appointments across Thailand.
