Thailand warns of heavy rain and high seas as monsoon intensifies
The Thai Meteorological Department issued a series of warnings for July 11‑15, noting that the southwest monsoon will strengthen over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Wave heights are expected to reach 2‑4 metres, exceeding four metres in thunderstorms, while heavy to very heavy rain will affect western South Thailand, the western part of the central region and the east. Provinces most at risk include Ranong, Phang Nga, Chanthaburi, Trat and Kanchanaburi, where flash floods, sudden river rise and landslides are possible. Small vessels are urged to stay ashore and all boats should avoid sailing in thunderstorm zones.
Typhoon Bavi is forecast to move past Taiwan and make landfall on China’s eastern coast, without a direct impact on Thailand. However, its presence will reinforce the monsoon over Thailand, further increasing the risk of heavy rain and high seas. Authorities advise the public to monitor updates, limit non‑essential travel and heed safety precautions.
The department provided contact details and online resources for real‑time information, urging residents in the affected provinces to stay alert to the danger of rapid flooding and mudslides, especially in hill‑slope and low‑lying areas.
