Thailand weather warning: heavy rain and flood risks
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall across upper Thailand from August 29 to September 2. The weather pattern is driven by a monsoon trough shifting southward across the northern and northeastern parts of the country, combined with a strong low-pressure area near the coast of northern Vietnam and a strong southwest monsoon.
Significant risks include flash floods, forest runoff, and overflowing riverbanks, particularly in low-lying areas, near waterways, and foothills. The northern, northeastern, and eastern regions are expected to be most heavily impacted. Specific areas in the north, such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Tak, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun, are expected to experience heavy falls.
Maritime conditions are also expected to be hazardous. In the upper Andaman Sea, waves may reach 2 to 3 meters, with waves exceeding 3 meters in thunderstorm areas. Small vessels are advised to remain ashore during this period for safety.
