Vietnam traffic authorities expand AI and laser surveillance to penalize violations

Traffic authorities across Vietnam are increasingly utilizing advanced technology to monitor and penalize road violations. In Hanoi, an AI-powered camera system detected over 4,000 violations in a single week between September 17 and 23, 2026. Common offenses identified by the system included driving in the wrong direction, failure to wear helmets, and disobeying traffic signals.

In Thanh Hoa and Hung Yen provinces, police issued notices for hundreds of violations caught via surveillance cameras, including failure to wear seatbelts and improper helmet use. Meanwhile, in Lam Dong province, authorities deployed five new laser-based speed detection cameras on National Highway 28B and DT. 724 to automatically record speeding vehicles.

Individual enforcement actions also highlighted significant breaches. In Dong Thap, a motorcyclist was fined nearly 9 million VND after being caught 12 times for speeding and lane violations via camera surveillance. In Dong Nai, a driver was caught with a blood alcohol concentration of 1.649 mg/l, more than four times the legal limit, while also lacking a driver's license and vehicle registration.
