Vietnam schools respond to heavy rain, flooding and mergers
Heavy rainfall and flooding across Vietnam have prompted various emergency responses in schools and local communities. In Ho Chi Minh City, several schools, including Nguyen Binh Khiem Primary and Nguyen Huu Tho High School, have implemented flexible arrangements to ensure student safety. Principals have issued letters to parents allowing students to stay home if travel is unsafe or permitting them to wear alternative footwear if their shoes were soaked by floods, emphasizing that safety and well-being take precedence over strict dress codes.
In Thanh Hoa province, flooding has caused significant disruption. In Dong Tien commune, slow-receding waters have left three schools submerged, forcing more than 1,800 students to miss classes. Local authorities have launched large-scale efforts to clean up debris, clear drainage systems, and mitigate the aftermath of the floods to prevent disease and restore infrastructure.
Separately, in Nghe An province, 129 students at Quynh Tam Primary School have been unable to attend classes for three weeks following a decision to merge local satellite campuses into a main site. Parents have protested the move due to concerns over the distance and the dilapidated state of existing facilities. Local officials and teachers are currently conducting outreach to encourage families to return to school.
