The Beatles release rare 1965 songwriting tape of Day Tripper

Universal Music Group and Apple Corps Ltd. have released an unreleased songwriting work tape of The Beatles' classic song “Day Tripper”. The recording captures John Lennon and Paul McCartney working together at Lennon’s home, Kenwood, in Surrey during the 1965 sessions for the album “Rubber Soul”.

The audio provides a rare glimpse into the early stages of the song's creation, revealing that it was initially based on an old folk tune written by Lennon. Notably, the recording lacks the song's iconic guitar riff, which was composed later. The tape also captures the duo laughing and joking during the process, highlighting their creative chemistry.

This release is part of an upcoming expanded special edition of “Rubber Soul,” scheduled for release on October 2. The new collection, remixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell, will include 24 early recordings, such as previously unreleased studio takes and home demos. The super deluxe editions will also feature a hardback book and various high-fidelity audio formats.
