The Big Cat Sanctuary introduces rusty-spotted cat to new enclosure

Kuda, a male rusty-spotted cat weighing less than 1 kg, has moved into a new purpose-built outdoor enclosure at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Smarden, Kent. The enclosure stands 5 meters (16 feet) high and features elevated walkways and climbing structures designed to encourage exploration and activity for the small feline.

The rusty-spotted cat is recognized as the world’s smallest wild cat species and is currently classified as “near-threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). These nocturnal animals are native to India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, but face increasing threats in their natural habitats due to deforestation and human encroachment.

The sanctuary’s project is part of an international breeding programme aimed at safeguarding the species' long-term survival. Staff members reported that Kuda has settled in well, and the facility is now seeking a female breeding partner to support global conservation efforts.
