The Big Cat Sanctuary opens new habitat for Rusty-spotted cat

Kuda, a male Rusty-spotted cat, has moved into a new purpose-built habitat at The Big Cat Sanctuary in the UK. The enclosure is the largest of its kind in the country specifically designed for this species, which weighs less than 1kg.

The new environment features five-metre-high structures, elevated walkways, and climbing elements intended to mimic the natural habitats found in India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Sanctuary staff report that Kuda is adjusting well to the space, moving from initial caution to active exploration.

The Rusty-spotted cat is currently classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List due to threats from human encroachment and deforestation. Following Kuda's successful acclimation, the sanctuary aims to secure a female breeding partner to support global conservation and breeding programmes for the species.
