The Gambia election preparations face logistical and reform challenges

Preparations for The Gambia’s 2026 presidential election are underway, amid concerns regarding campaign timelines and calls for electoral reform. Joseph Colley, Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), noted that candidates may face a compressed campaign period of only 17 to 18 days. Colley highlighted potential logistical difficulties in managing nationwide activities and candidate movement across the country’s various regions within such a narrow window.

The IEC is currently developing an operational plan, which includes a forthcoming nomination schedule and the procurement of essential materials such as indelible ink and security seals.

In a separate development, presidential aspirant Fatou Jaw Manneh has officially launched her campaign, advocating for significant political changes. Manneh has called for the extension of voting rights to Gambians living in the diaspora, arguing that citizens abroad should have a voice in national leadership given their economic contributions through remittances. She also criticized the current administration under President Adama Barrow, citing issues with the cost of living, irregular migration, and electricity challenges.
