The Simpsons creators discuss show's future and sequel
During The Hollywood Reporter’s inaugural Animation Power List breakfast, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening and showrunner Matt Selman discussed the future of the long-running animated series. Having recently surpassed 800 episodes, the show continues to see success after three decades.
Selman expressed a desire for the show to eventually transition to new creators to ensure its longevity, stating, “I would love to not cling to the show forever and let fresh people keep it amazing forever.” Groening noted that there is currently “no end in sight” for the series.
The pair also addressed the upcoming Simpsons Movie 2, which arrives 20 years after the original film. Groening explained the long hiatus by noting the intense exhaustion the original production caused the writing and animation teams, adding that they have finally recovered enough to pursue a sequel.
