The Washington Post ordered to rehire columnist Karen Attiah

An independent arbitrator has ruled that The Washington Post did not have sufficient cause to terminate veteran opinion columnist Karen Attiah, ordering the newspaper to rehire her.

The dispute began in September 2025 after Attiah posted social media commentary regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Attiah had criticized what she perceived as racial double standards in the public reaction to the event. The Washington Post subsequently terminated her employment, citing “gross misconduct” and concerns regarding editorial integrity and social media policies.

Attiah, who spent 11 years at the publication and helped establish its Global Opinions section, challenged the decision through a grievance and arbitration process supported by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild and the Democracy Defenders Fund. Following the ruling by arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa, Attiah expressed her readiness to return to her position, stating her work is about “serving readers,” “representing communities,” and “serving democracy.”
