Theater initiatives utilize performing arts to support mental health
Theater productions in Argentina and Spain are being utilized as tools for mental health awareness and therapeutic engagement.
In Mendoza, Argentina, the company Los Salieris de Chaplin is presenting a production of Alejandro Casona’s “Prohibido suicidarse en primavera” at the Espacio Cultural Julio Le Parc. The play, which features a cast of doctors, psychologists, and teachers, explores themes of human fragility and the will to live within a sanatorium setting. The production has been recognized for institutional interest by various universities and municipalities.
In Sagunt, Spain, the Voramar group, part of a local program for individuals with severe psychological issues, recently premiered a production of Alfred Jarry’s “Ubú Rey.” Working with the Teatres de la Llum company, participants used the satirical play to engage with social behaviors and community interaction, highlighting the role of performing arts in overcoming conditions such as agoraphobia.
